WASTE MANAGEMENT AND PROFIT EFFICIENCY IN PIG PRODUCTION IN EBONYI SOUTH AGRICULTURAL ZONE, EBONYI STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study examined the waste management and profit efficiency of pig farms in the agricultural zone of South Ebonyi, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. A sample of sixty-six (66) pig farmers was randomly selected from the study area using structured questionnaires. Data analysis was based on complete responses from a cross-sectional survey of respondents. The data was analyzed using the frequency distribution and the frontier profit function. The results showed that pig production was dominated by males (62%) and that the majority (75.8%) were under 50 years of age. About 98.5% of pig farmers had a minimum of primary education, while 83.3% had less than 10 years of experience in agriculture. 68.1% of household members had up to 6 members in their family, while 31.8% had between 7 and 12 members. Statistics show that 93.9% of respondents collected their pig waste manually with shovels and spades. The majority (74.2%) of farmers did not treat their agricultural waste before or after disposal, polluting their environment. The "waste" of pigs was not considered useful by 63.6% of the breeders. However, the average level of efficiency of pig production in the region is 66.33, indicating that it is still possible to increase profits by 33.6% if technical efficiency gains, allocation and scale are improved. At the same time, age, experience and gender have contributed significantly to the inefficiency of pig farming in the region. It is therefore suggested to train livestock farmers through workshops, conferences and extension services on the conversion and use of livestock wastes or manure, for example. organic fertilizers that can easily be made available to many smallholder farmers to supplement the rare and very expensive inorganic fertilizer. The government should put in place effective surveillance services to sensitize pig farmers to the reduction of environmental pollution and the occurrence of epidemics. The government should reduce import duties on pig drugs to increase production and profitability.
