ABSTRACT
The design of soil erosion control structure for Onueke, Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State was carried out. Various field and laboratory test were carried-out which includes particle size analysis, atterberg limit, specific gravity, field permeability, moisture content, etc. An unlined trapezoidal channel AB was designed carrying 3.63m3/s with bottom width of 0.531m; depth of 0.615m; and bed slope 2.5% respectively to control the erosion by conveying the runoff to the Onueke river which serves as the outlet discharge point. In order to enhance the effectiveness of the control, a drop structure of length 0.63m and height of drop of 2m with silting basin of length 5.15m were in-cooperated into the design. The parameter obtained from grain size analysis was analyzed using both Unified and FAA textural classification systems and the soil was classified as silty clay with effective diameter of particle (D10) as 0.0041mm. The atterberg limit test showed the soil is medium plastic with liquid limit of 36.0% (average). The permeability test shows that water is well infiltrated into the soil with permeability (k) of 2.25x10-3. It also has a uniformity co-efficient (Cu) of 19.5, signifying that it is a well graded soil. It is therefore recommended that the farmers using the watershed for farming should be taught the effective methods of erosion control and the area most prone to erosion should be filled-up compacted and grassed.
