ABSTRACT
The Water quality parameters of Nwaorie River were evaluated for irrigation and drinking purposes. The water samples were collected from three different locations (A, B and C) from the Nwaorie River at a distance of 30m away from each other and were analysed for different water quality parameters. The results revealed that the water quality parameters showed significant variations among the different locations on the river. Turbidity ranges from 3.4-4.6, copper 0.025-0.03, iron 0.03-0.04, sodium 164-191,manganese 0.05-0.062,chloride 142-158, nitrate 10-12, nitrite 1.1-1.4, hardness 120-159, SAR 192.84-225.48,pH 6.7-7.5,calcium 1.0-1.9, magnesium 0.03-0.05, respectively. Some physico-chemical parameters of the river at different locations studied were below the WHO and FAO limits for drinking and irrigation water uses, while some were above the standards, except for the turbidity, and pH. Mean concentrations of major ions, nutrients and heavy metals selected in all the locations were generally low when compared to the acceptable standards for drinking water (WHO), except for sodium absorption ratio which was above the standard. The microbiological parameters examined showed coliform 25cfu, 43cfu, 37cfu in locations A, B and C, E-coli 15-28cfu, 45-51cfu, 50-53cfu respectively, shyella 3-10cfu in location C but not seen in locations A and B. The results show that the values were far above the recommended guidelines given by WHO, NIS and FAO, for drinking water and thus the water is not fit for drinking. Nevertheless, apart from the microbial organisms, the river water may be regarded as appropriate source of water for irrigation in the area. A dam could be constructed across the river in order to subject the water to some treatment processes, especially elimination of enteric microbes and to maintain the turbidity to the required standard before being used.
