ABSTRACT
This paper presents the effects of water-cement ratio on the compressive strength of blocks made with wastepaper as partial replacement of s and. There is need to efficiently dispose wastepaper, reduce the cost of block production and produce lightweight blocks with reduced dead load of structures. To achieve this, standard mix of 1:6 was prepared without wastepaper to serve as control and then cement-sand-wastepaper blocks, were prepared with 1:5.1:0.9 using 15% replacement of sand with wastepaper. The mixes were prepared for different water-cement ratios of 0.40, 0.42, 0.45, 0.48 and 0.50 and were moulded with 225mm x 225mm x 450mm hollow block mould, for both sandcrete blocks and cement-sandwastepaper blocks giving a total of 60blocks. The blocks were cured for 28days by sprinkling them with water twice daily. The result indicates that compressive strength of standard sandcrete blocks was higher than the compressive strength of cement-sand-wastepaper blocks. Also, for standard sandcrete blocks, as water-cement ratio increased, compressive strength of the blocks decreased. While for sand-wastepaper blocks, as water-cement ratio increased, compressive strength increased. The inclusion of wastepaper as partial replacement of sand did not compromise the properties of the blocks and therefore suitable for block production. Water-cement ratio of 0.50 is thus recommended since it gave the optimum compressive strength.
