ABSTRACT

Nigeria’s food security problem remains a critical challenge with the ever growing population of the country. Food security can be said to be achieved when all people at all times have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Nigeria’s food insecurity involves problem of insufficient food production, hunger, under-nutrition and eventually malnutrition which tend to exist in varying proportions. The effective production of genetically modified (GM) crops has the potential to alleviate food security problems, end food shortages, meet nation’s nutritional requirement and improve the socioeconomic life of the country’s teeming population. This review focuses on the potential and sustainability of biotechnology through genetically modified crops to provide solutions to food insecurity in Nigeria.
