ABSTRACT
This study was
conducted to investigate and compare the compositions of two varieties: Tympanotonus
fuscatus and Pachymelania aurita of periwinkle in Nigeria. The
parameters considered were proximate compositions (moisture, protein, fat,
carbohydrate, fibre and ash). The average amount of crude protein was found to
be 56.06% and 53.47% for T. fuscatus and P. aurita,
respectively whereas the average amounts for carbohydrate and lipid were 11.26%
and 6.17% for T. fuscatus and 14.37% and 4.77% for P. aurita, respectively.
Also, the ash and fibre values obtained were 15.91% and 10.60% for T.
fuscatus and 16.14% and 10.98% for P. aurita. More so, it was
observed that the caloric value of T. fuscatus was higher than that of P.
aurita. It is worthy of note that the ANOVA carried out on these data reported
for the two periwinkle varieties were significant on all the parameters
investigated at p
