ABSTRACT

This study investigates the adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solution using chemically modified Africa elemi seeds activated carbon (AESAC). The adsorbent prepared was characterized using FTIR and SEM. Box Behnkin design (BBD) in response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the adsorption process. The effect of three variables: pH, biosorbent dosage and contact time and their effects on percentage removal were investigated. Based on BBD design, quadratic model and two factor interaction (2FI) were developed. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to judge the adequacy of the model. The optimum conditions of Cr(VI) removal using AESAC are pH (2.0), biosorbent dosage (20mg) and contact time (70min) respectively. The percentage of Cr(VI) removal obtained was 98.64%. The model prediction was in good agreement with experimental result and AESAC was found to be effective in removing Cr(VI) from aqueous solution.
