ABSTRACT

Efficient electricity supply is necessary for the economic development of any country as well as delivery of key public services, including agriculture, health, education, and infrastructure. Sustainable development in energy and agriculture is minimizing the use of non-renewable resources, such as fossil fuel used in power generation, diesel generators for water pumping for irrigation. Hence, there is need for the promotion of renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaic systems, hydro power system and other renewable systems for post harvesting processes, water pumps and electricity for sustainable economic growth. This paper x-rayed the renewable energy resources for sustainable development in power generation and agriculture. The data for renewable energy sources used in this paper was an extract from the report of 2018 World renewable energy generation statistics (2010- 2017). Renewable energy resources used include hydro, wind, solar, biomas(bioenergy and bagasse) and geothermal. The simulation of the result was done using Scilab software. From the study, hydro energy resource contributes the highest renewable generation throughout the world, including Africa and Nigeria. The annual percentage contribution of solar energy resource increase from 2.98% in 2010 to 16.87% in 2017: wind energy resources increases from 13.52% to 22.20% while hydro energy resource annual percentage contribution decreases from 76.99% to 54.88%: geothermal energy resource contribution decreases from 0.76% to 0.56%. The biomass (bioenergy and bagasse) energy resource fluctuates in the range 4.7% - 5.04% and 0.77% - 0.85% respectively.
