ABSTRACT
This study
analyzed the effect of mercerization treatment on groundnut shell samples. The groundnut
shells were processed, dried and treated with NaOH varying the time and concentration
of the treatment. The treated samples were washed, dried and exposed to the atmosphere
to observe its moisture absorption property every 24 hours for a period of 5
days. The treated samples absorbed moisture at a very reduced rate than the untreated
samples with the sample soaked with 4% NaOH for 4 hours absorbing the least moisture.
FTIR and SEM analysis confirmed that the groundnut shell samples were suitably mercerized.
Hence mercerization treatment has a tremendous effect on reducing the moisture
intake of groundnut shell samples.
