ABSTRACT
This research
investigated the corrosion inhibitive properties of papaya leaf extract on mild
steel under different acid and alkaline media at constant temperatures of 30oC
and 60oC using the weight loss technique. The corrosion inhibition effects of
papaya extracts of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 g in 250 ml each of 0.5 M, 0.75
M, 1.0 M HNO3 and 0.5M, 1.0M, 1.5M NaOH solutions at 30oC and 60oC respectively
were investigated for a period of 8 hours for each medium at 2 hours intervals.
The results showed that corrosion rate increased with concentration of the
corroding medium in the absence of papaya leaf extract but decreased with
increase in papaya leaf extract in each of the test medium. At 30 and 60oC, the
corrosion inhibition rate decreased with increase in temperature. The results
obtained showed papaya leaf extracts as an effective inhibitor with over 90%
inhibition efficiency in both media but cannot be used to prevent corrosion of
mild steel completely in NaOH medium.
