ABSTRACT

The comparative analysis of the quality of bore hole and tube well water for domestic water use in Umudike was conducted. The water samples which were collected from six different locations of tube wells and boreholes in Umudike were analyzed for different water quality parameters. The physico-chemical parameters analyzed were temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, Salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand (BOD),chemical oxygen demand (COD), calcium, magnesium, and hardness, while biological parameters were total coli-form, fecal coli form, semolina thyphl and fecal streptococci. The analysis was based on the standard of the international standard organization. Results revealed that the borehole water had temperature, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solid(TSS),pH, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, calcium, magnesium, hardness, BOD and COD of 28oc,86us/cm,27mg/L,6.99,2.67NTU,5.50mg/L,13.33mg/L,20mg/L,31.33mg/L,4.07and6.67 respectively, while tube well water in the same order recorded 27.67oc 103.67µs/cm, 35mg/L, 6.80,39.50mg/L, 3.00NTU,5.27mg/L, 18.67mg/L, 13.67mg/L,32.33mg/L, 3.97 and 6.67, respectively. No total coliform/coliform, semolina, facial streptococci or colour were detected for both borehole and tube well water. Result of the analysis showed that the water was fit for human consumption as most of the data obtained conform to WHO standards. The statistical analysis of the results indicated that there was significant difference in the results obtained for the borehole and tube well for conductivity, pH and salinity, while in all the other parameters there was no significant difference in their results.
