ABSTRACT
This
study evaluates the relationship between users’ socioeconomic characteristics
and place performance outcomes in green-certified buildings in Lagos State,
Nigeria. A quantitative post-occupancy evaluation approach was adopted using
structured questionnaires administered across nine LEED and EDGE-certified
buildings. Out of 1,119 distributed questionnaires, 1,004 valid responses were
retrieved and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Building Condition Index
(BCI), Place Performance Index (PPI), Pearson correlation, Chi-square analysis,
and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The findings reveal that the assessed
buildings generally exhibited high technical and environmental performance,
particularly in indoor comfort, energy efficiency, ventilation, and maintenance
quality. Perception and green housing among green-certified buildings were
significantly influenced by socioeconomic variables such as income, occupation,
age, education, and household size while gender showed no significant
relationship. The calculated BCI values ranged between 3.68 and 4.40, however,
PPI values ranged between 4.00 and 4.53, which is an indication of a general high place performance across the
assessed buildings. Furthermore, the findings establishes that a strong
positive relationship exists between building condition and place performance
and also demonstrates that user satisfaction and environmental functionality
extend beyond technical efficiency alone. The study concludes that
effectiveness of green building performance in Lagos is dependent on the
interaction between the physical building quality, socioeconomic actualities,
and user experience, thereby stressing the need for context-responsive
sustainability frameworks in Nigeria
