ABSTRACT
This paper focuses on the development of an
intelligent host-based packet filtering firewall for computer security. Due to
the salient nature of data with respect to integrity and confidentiality,
digital information must be kept safe from intruders. This is possible by
employing security techniques in computer technology and it can be achieved by
developing a standalone application to safeguard data and information. There
are several threats from attackers which include the destruction of computer
hardware and software and the loss, modification, theft, unauthorized use,
observation or disclosure of confidential and vital data. Packet filtering
method was used to inspect packets transferred between computers. When a packet
does not match the packet filter's set of filtering rules, the packet filter
either drops (silently discards) the packet, or rejects the packet (discards it
and generate an Internet Control Message Protocol notification for the sender)
else it is allowed to pass. The programming languages chosen for implementation
are C# and C++ while the development methodology followed the waterfall model.
A fairly efficient host-based packet filtering firewall with a user-friendly interface using WPF framework for user
interactivity was developed which also consist of a packet capturing feature which
helps in intercepting and logging traffic. The system was deployed and tested in a client-server
model and personal computers as the testing machine, and it yielded accurate
result.
