ABSTRACT

This paper presents the negative effects of physiological changes of cattle if not monitored online are dangerous to their wellbeing, thereby increasing cost of production and management, thus profitability is reduced. However, in this era of sensor networks and advancement in telecommunication technology, physiological parameters that ensure cattle wellbeing can be monitored online. In this research work, height, reach size and body weight are monitored to establish any deviation from the standard measurement using ZigBee sensor network (IEEE 802.15.4). The phenomenon was used to characterize the health status of each cattle into two classes (healthy and unhealthy). The sensor after processing, communicated with the farm owner of any anomaly via SMS alert through the base station. This prompts urgent action. The result shows that an increased stress will reduce the rate of feeding, thereby affecting the growth rate negatively. The weights of healthy cattle are proportional to their height and reach sizes according to its category. At some various levels of the model analysis, each cattle have a range of weight acceptability. Within the range, cattle are believed to be healthy while unhealthy if it exceeds or lower than the range.
