ABSTRACT

The paper attempts to examine the trend in renewable energy generation capacity in Nigeria (2011 – 2020). The objective is to have a better understanding of the generation of renewable energy of the study area. The renewable energy sources considered include hydropower, solar energy, solar photovoltaic energy and bioenergy. The assessment was carried out using statistics, trend analysis, and regression models. Results showed that the hydropower energy sources are the most utilized mode of power generation in the study area. It mirrors a normal distribution with skewness = 0.267. The distribution curve for all the energy generation is platykurtic as the numeric value of the kurtosis is less than 3. Also, the highest growth rate of 45% is attributed to solar energy while the hydropower generation has an insignificant growth rate of 0.047%. Finally, polynomial regression model was observed to be the most appropriate model for predicting hydropower, solar photovoltaic and bioenergy power sources while the exponential model was suitable for the solar energy.
