ABSTRACT
In
this work, report on experimental investigation on the heat-treatment of the Al-Mg-Si alloys with tin at 300oC
to reveal their strengthening mechanism at a
higher temperature was conducted on unaged and aged samples. The aluminium alloy 6063 and tin
was alloyed at a temperature of 700oC with a 2000g Ceramic Alumina Crucible cup. Percentage composition
of the tin was varied from 5%wt to 25%wt. Different test samples were prepared
and heat-treated at a temperature of 300 oC
for 1hr in Carbonite Furnace and cooled in air. Hardness, Tensile and Impact tests were conducted. The unaged
sample with 25wt% tin had the highest Ultimate Tensile Strengthn (UTS) of 129
MPa, while the aged sample with 20wt% tin
had the highest UTS of 119. 43 MPa. Also, the samples with the lowest Impact
energy for unaged and aged aluminium 6063 were 25wt% (10.9 J) and 2 wt% (8.2 J)
respectively. The microstructure of the samples was studied
using a digital metallurgical microscope at 100x magnification. The heat treatment of
Al 6063 with tin at 300oC showed drop-in hardness, impact energy,
and strength. The aged samples had lower mechanical properties compared to the
unaged samples. However, increase in wt% of tin had an increase in hardness and UTS but drop in impact energy.
