ABSTRACT

Manufacturer’s information is not sufficient to determine the overall performance of PhotoVoltaic (PV) modules and solar-based systems. Designers need a reliable tool to predict and quantify energy that can be produced by PV modules, under varying operating conditions. This work is aimed at performance analysis of such solar-based systems. A single diode (5-parameter) model is employed in the analysis of the characteristics of PV system under varying physical and environmental parameters. Standard PV mathematical expressions and the PV module nameplate data are utilized in the computations carried using MATLAB. Investigated is the dependence of the output of PV module on temperature and irradiance. Simulated I-V and P-V curves at STC as well as under varying temperature and irradiance is validated using experimental data of the PV module installed on the rooftop of a building. There is a good agreement between the I-V and P-V curves obtained from the simulation and experimental data. With this finding, the single diode method can be used as veritable tool for prediction of PV module energy production performance.
