ABSTRACT
This paper demonstrates how rogowski coils can be
used to replace the conventional current transformers in injection substations.
A live experiment was carried out on the 11kV side of the 33/11kV Injection
Substation inside the 132/33kV Nibo Substation located in Awka, the capital of
Anambra State of Nigeria. In the experiments, five (5) improvised rogowski
coils were used to encircle the current carrying conductors and the rogowski
coil output voltages were measured and recorded. The corresponding values of
the current were also recorded from the analog ammeters on the indoor panels.
Optimization of the results obtained showed that the coils obeyed the known
theory of Rogowski coils. The results also showed that the coils can be used
with relative ease and at much cheaper cost to achieve upgrade of the injection
substation to a digital substation.
