ABSTRACT
In
this study, Defattened Mucuna Seed Coagulant (DMSC) was prepared, characterized
and flocculation performance of the biocoagulant in turbid water clarification
was compared with conventional coagulants. DMSCs were prepared and
characterized using proximate composition analysis and Fourier Transform
Infrared (FTIR) spectrometry. Batch clarification experiment was conducted
using jar test apparatus. From the proximate analysis, moisture content, ash
content, crude fiber and protein content were found to be 9.6%, 4.0%, 4.06% and
28.8%, respectively. FTIR analysis of the samples showed the presence of
intermolecular hydrogen bond with hydroxyl group (polymeric chain) and amide
group. The maximum Turbidity Removal Percentage (TRP) for turbid water for DMSC
is 96.3% and this compares well with chemical coagulants with TRP of 97.2%.
Thus, it can be concluded that DMSC is effective for water clarification.
