ABSTRACT

The effect of particle size on the porosity of garri was studied and analysed using the sieving method and porosimetry at a moisture content of 10%(db). Results showed that average particle size of the garri used was 0.60mm with a fineness modulus of 4.79 and a uniformity index of 2:8:0. As expected, it was also found that porosity, generally, increased with increase in particle size. Specifically, at a particle size of 2.0mm, porosity was 43.8% which decreased to 14.9% at a corresponding particle size of 0.15mm. The porosity may therefore be useful in packaging and predicting the thermophysical properties of garri in both secondary and tertiary processing unit operations simply because air has its own thermal conductivity value.
