ABSTRACT
Traffic congestion
management is increasingly critical in cities worldwide. To address this
challenge, emerging technologies are being leveraged, prominently featuring Internet
of Things (IoT) communications. These technologies play a pivotal role in
enabling intelligent systems for effective smart traffic congestion management.
By harnessing IoT advancements, cities can potentially mitigate and prevent
traffic congestion on a global scale. This paper provides a comprehensive
review of emerging technologies designed for IoT-based traffic congestion
management. It explores various solutions aimed at overcoming identified
challenges, focusing on key aspects such as queue detection, ramp metering, IoT
applications in speed limit control, and the integration of IoT in traffic
signal management. The strengths and limitations of employing IoT in smart
traffic management are thoroughly assessed. Additionally, the study proposes strategies
to address challenges inherent in IoT-based traffic control, with the goal of
enhancing the resilience and efficacy of smart traffic management systems. It
also discusses the limitations and impacts associated with these emerging
technologies. The paper presents a forward-looking perspective by outlining
future projections for the role of IoT in traffic management. By delving into
these emerging technologies and their potential applications, this research
contributes to the ongoing discussion on efficient and robust solutions for
managing traffic congestion.
