ABSTRACT

In this article, a production plan for Nicen Plastic Industries Limited, Aba,Abia state, Nigeria was developed for adequate allocation of available scarce resources to her different products. The company is into the production of five different plastic products namely plastic chairs, domestic bucket, paint bucket, front and back fenders. Requisite data collected through documentation and interview with various resource persons were used to develop a linear programming model whose solution optimizes the profit and production activities of the company was developed. From the results obtained, the company is advised to stop the production of plastic chair, produce 30,000 units of domestic bucket, 4970 units of paint bucket, 400 units of front fender and 700 units of back fender at a unit production time of 35seconds, 20 seconds, 12 seconds, 75 seconds and 280 seconds respectively. This plan will yield a profit of $2,154.00 which is an increase of 28% from the current monthly gross profit of $1,680.10. This shows that if a suitable operation planning model is developed for an industry, optimal results are guaranteed. However, linear programming technique needs to be considered as a veritable asset in production decision-making capable of paving way for profit maximization and cost reduction not only for Nicen Plastic Industries Limited but for other manufacturing Industries.
