ABSTRACT
A well designed reinforced concrete element when poorly constructed leads to failure of structure overtime due to quality of workmanship in terms of material selection and construction approaches. The beneficial use of sliding formwork in vertical tapering chimney construction examines the method and processes involved in a case study of Fan building stack of Ajaokuta steel plant. For a structure of 150m height the conventional or traditional formwork construction is practically demanding if not impossible to achieve. Based on these challenges, the use of slip form method which combine several advantages such as seamless homogeneous, monolithic, sustainable, cost effective and safety consideration in achieving 32 days construction operation presents the best construction choice. Therefore, when time of construction, labour use, reduced material wastage and quality of output is considered in horizontal median/kerb construction, vertical structural member construction such as in bridge piers, cooling towers, tall buildings, silos and chimney is necessary, sliding formwork method present an inevitable alternative to traditional approach of quality construction.
