ABSTRACT

This paper focused on the cost analysis of power outages in Nigerian university. The different periods and causes of power outages were recorded over some period of time in two testbeds environments comprising of area1 and area2 in the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU). Also, the pricing policy was applied for generating sets used in the two coverage areas of the institution based on their capacity. Result showed that MOUAU spent 18, 560, 749.33 to provide power in area 1 using 500KVA generating set, but at a lesser cost, the amount of power would have been supplied by Power Holding Cooperation of Nigeria (PHCN) at a cost of 7, 713, 843. 20 for the same area 1. Result obtained showed that cost of using generating set in area 1 is about 70.6% higher than the cost of using PHCN which is 29.4%. Result also showed that  the university's expenses for using generating set in area 2 is about 69.9% higher than the expenses for using PHCN Plc. that 30% in the same area.
