ABSTRACT
This paper presents the
calculated Water Quality Index for the assessment of groundwater quality around
Uyo main refuse dumpsite. For calculating the water quality index, water
samples were collected at four sampling locations around the dumpsite and
analyzed for pH, temperature, turbidity, DO, EC, TDS, TSS, chloride, sulphate,
nitrate, lead, cadmium, nickel and copper. The results indicated that the water
quality index of the groundwater exceeded the status of water quality at the
four sampling locations due to percolation of leachate from the landfill site
into the groundwater. This means that the groundwater is unsuitable for
drinking and dissemination of wildlife and fish culture except they are
properly treated. Public awareness need to be raise on leachate contamination
of groundwater around dumpsites in order to improve public health.
