ABSTRACT
Extract of Anacardium
Occidentale Nut shell was investigated as corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in
1M HCl using conventional weight loss method and scanning electron microscopic
studies. The mild steel samples were
cut, grind, polished, degrease, weigh and immersed in a different concentration
of Anacardium Occidentale nut shell extract (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5%v/v) at
temperatures of 38OC, 50OC and 70OC for a
period of 2 and 4 hours. Loss in weight
was evaluated and corrosion rate was calculated. The loss in weight and decrease in corrosion
rate with increase concentration of the extract was due to the adsorption of
active molecules leading to the formation of a protective layer on the surface
of mild steel. Scanning electron
microscopic studies provide th e confirmatory evidence of improved surface
condition, due to the adsorption leading to corrosion protection. The corrosion resistance exhibit by mild
steel with addition of Anacardium Occidentale nut shell extract at lower
temperature was due to adsorption which blocked more active sites while at
higher temperature, adsorption becomes more difficult leading to reduction of
inhibitor efficiency of Anacardium Occidentale nut shell extract. The weight loss results showed that the
extract of Anacardium Occidentale nut shell is indeed a corrosion inhibitor.
