ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the Error Control and Concealment for Mobile Video Transmission. The transmission of high quality real time interactive video over lossy networks as a result of data loss in the network causes video quality to degrade. The issue of error control and concealment in video transmission has become a very important aspect in video delivery over unreliable networks such as internet and wireless networks. Reference Picture Selection technique has been effective in controlling of error during video transmission based on the role of the encoder and decoder. The Reference Picture Selection which operates in both positive acknowledgement (RPSACK) and negative acknowledgment (RPSNACK) make the encoder to select one of several previous frames as a reference frame for predictive encoding of subsequent frames. The Batch Video Quality Metric tool was used to determine the impact of the Reference Picture Selection technique. High quality videos with a wide variety of scene complexity and motion vector magnitude were selected and encoded. The results obtained shows that under high packet loss and high round trip time, the quality of video degrades for RPS NACK but improves at a lower round trip time and at a lower packet loss. With RPS ACK, the video quality improves when the round trip time and packet loss was low but degrades when both packet loss and round trip time was high. When the results were compared, it was discovered that when the loss rate was less than 1.482 the RPS NACK performs better than RPS ACK but when the loss rate was higher than 1.482, RPS ACK performs better than RPS NACK for 60ms and 240ms round trip times.
