ABSTRACT

Evaluation of Photovoltaic– Hydro- Diesel hybrid system for electricity generation was carried out with HOMER, using Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) as a case study. Data was obtained on monthly energy schedule of MOUAU, solar irradiation intensity for a period of 12 years and the hydropower potential /discharge rate of Anya River in MOUAU and optimized using HOMER. The data collected are 279851.684kWh/yr, 14.77kWh/m2 and 580L/s, respectively. The optimization result indicates that the hybrid power system (HPS) generates a total energy of 474,901kWh/yr also, the energy generated by each component of the HPS are in the fraction of 61%,37% and 2% for diesel, hydro and solar systems respectively. Their unit costs per hour is given as USD 0.200kW/hr, USD 1.30kWh and USD0.064kW/hr. The hybrid power system also reduced the rate of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other harmful emissions from diesel generator. The renewable energy percentage of CO2 emission is 12% against 88% from diesel, of the total HPS emission. Photovoltaic– Hydro- Diesel hybrid power system is found worthwhile for MOUAU, it is reliable, cheap and environmental friendly. The net present cost (NPC) and the unit cost of energy for the HPS is USD 1470938 and USD 0.312/kWh.
